Design Trends to Look Forward to in 2020

It’s hard to believe yet another decade has come and gone, but with this new milestone comes new design trends us architects and designers have to look forward to. Buffy Kaplan and Steve Dolleslager dive into what’s to come for 2020.

Hello

Goodbye grey; hello wallpaper. Don’t worry this isn’t your grandma’s wallpaper.

"Look for it everywhere, even on the ceilings.” - Buffy Kaplan

2020 is the year of being eco-friendly. Design trends will now feature sustainable materials such as rattan, cane, raffia, and grasscloths.

Goodbye

It’s an end of an era for the grey on grey trend. We’re moving towards punchy bold colors such as cobalt blue, saffron yellow and kelly green. Not into such bold colors? Don’t worry, the classic black and white is here to stay. Mix it up in 2020 with natural colors such as terra cotta.

Comebacks

Who said the 80’s is in the past? Well it’s back, enjoy it with a twist. Look for color blocking and furniture with rounded edges. Terrazzo made a comeback in 2019 and we’d love to see that continue in the new year. Last but not least, playing high contrast designs off of each other.

“Individuality will be a hit, such as custom pieces and unique design. Doing what makes you happy is more important than what’s on social media.” - Buffy Kaplan
